Virginia Commonwealth University stated their agreement on taking in enrollment of undocumented international students for compensating the fall in the number of applicants in 2020. The selection will be made based on an interview conducted by the university after reviewing the semester seats available.
As per the previous practice, the university did not allow international or undocumented students to study there who cannot show any legal document. People who settled in the United States in their childhood are, on the other hand, allowed to get enrolled in the curriculum of the university.
The university believes in providing access to students in acquiring knowledge and wisdom through education, and this practice of secluding undocumented or international students is something that stands against their principles. Hence the changes are agreed to be initiated as soon as possible to provide a chance for everyone to study there.
The university will be adopting measures on enrolling undocumented students done by other Virginia schools like George Mason University. According to the rules of State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, each university is allowed to utilize their own rules and regulations regarding the enrollment of undocumented students and the ones with DACA status as well.
Students with DACA status are who fall under the category of the undocumented pupil, are very happy with the decision. This is because their procedure of admission and all is very inconsistent. Many staff members do not have a fair idea of the difference between an unspecified student and a student with DACA status.
This will lead to unnecessary complications in the admission procedure. Hence withdrawal of this rule of not taking a specific sector of students will also nullify these unnecessary complications. And ultimately make the admission procedure smooth.
This rule, adopted by the Virginia Commonwealth University, is an order implemented by the Supreme Court in favour of the Trump Administration. Now everyone is waiting for the final verdict to be given by the court, which should be done before June 2020, as mentioned by the National Immigration Law Centre.
If the Trump administration favours it, then this rule might exist, which ultimately will lead to the loss of the educational position for DACA students as well as undocumented students. But if it does not, then things might turn out positive for them as well. Even though DACA students got a little bit of decent condition since they are still allowed to take in-state tuition and also establish domicile compared to the undocumented students.
The withdrawal of this rule will not only open doors to multiple people but will also bring profit to the university by increasing the number of international students. Quality education is something everyone deserves, and this law is working as a hindrance to such opportunities; hence, the majority of the people want it to be withdrawn.
